How To Perfectly Measure Dog's Paws?- The Right Dog Boot Size

Are you struggling to find the perfect fit for your furry friend's footwear? Does the thought of measuring your dog's paw size leave you scratching your head? But fear not! Whether your pup needs shoes for protection or traction, we've got some paw-some tips to help you out. In this guide, we'll discuss why a dog's paw size matters and how to accurately measure those furry feet.

Why Is Finding The Right Paw Size So Important?

For the first timers, it is natural that dog shoes will feel strange. If you are having doubts regarding whether or not your dog needs shoes, then read this.  Getting your pup to get used to his first shoes is very similar to getting a toddler to wear his first footwear. It is very natural if your pup walks funny. Don't forget to capture his super-cute first walks in a video.

Paws First, Fashion Second

Picture this: You slip on your favourite pair of shoes only to find they're either too loose or too tight. Ouch, right? Well, our furry friends experience the same discomfort when their shoes don't fit properly. Just like us, dogs need shoes that hug their paws just right. If they are too loose, the shoes risk slipping off. If they are too tight, it's a recipe for discomfort and potential health issues.

Measuring Up: Tips for a Perfect Fit for Your Dog's Paws

Now, let's get down to business. How exactly do you measure those adorable paws? Here are some tips to ensure you get it right:

  1. Size Matters, But Not in the Way You Think: Don't rely on your dog's weight or size to determine shoe size. Just like humans, dogs come in all shapes and sizes, and their paw size doesn't always correlate with their overall size.

  2. Nail It: Before you start measuring, make sure your pup's nails are trimmed. Long nails can skew your measurements and give you an inaccurate size.

  3. Fur Real: If your dog's paws are a bit furry, trim the hair around the edges before measuring. This ensures you get an accurate measurement without any interference from fluffy fur.

How Do I Measure My Dog’s Paws and Find The Right Sized Shoes?

Alright, let's get down to the nitty-gritty of measuring those paws:

Step Right Up: Grab a ruler or tape measure and position it under your dog's FRONT paw. Make sure it's parallel and placed at the widest part of the paw. This will give you the most accurate measurement of width.

Stand Tall: It is often said that you'll get a better measurement if your pup is standing on a tape or a ruler. This is because, when your dog is laying or sitting, his entire paw may not be splayed and you will end up getting a narrower measurement. But in our experience, measuring his paws while standing will give you a bigger size especially if your dog's breed is furry, like Shih Tzu.

If the widest part of his paw measures 4 cm, pick size S in Zoof Boots and size 4.5 in Zoof Plops/Grips.

Are All Four Dog Paws The Same Size?

It's a common misconception that all four of your dog's paws are identical. In reality, most breeds have wider front paws and narrower hind paws. So, don't be surprised if your pup needs different-sized shoes for their front and back feet. However, we designed our shoes so that the same size fits both the front and back paws. The only exception is when the size difference is over 1 cm.

What If My Pup Is Between Sizes?

If this is the case, get him a bigger size as it will be easier to strap him in and make it fit. This goes the same if the front paw is slightly wider than the back paw. Dog shoes are adjustable like that. Tight shoes will make him uncomfortable.

How Should A Dog Shoe Fit?

When putting shoes on your dog, ensure that the entire paw is pushed into the shoe. Touch the bottom of the booties to check this. The tongue of the shoes should not be twisted and it should be breathable after you tie the velcro.

If this is the case, get him a bigger size as it will be easier to strap him in and make it fit. This goes the same if the front paw is slightly wider than the back paw. Dog shoes are adjustable like that. Tight shoes will make him uncomfortable.
